Hebrews 9:16,17

We didn't get a far as I thought we might last week. Of course what else is new, do we ever. Here is what we came up with in the discussion of the questions I listed.

Q. V16 Who is the "one who made it?" Answer. God is the one who made the covenant. The problem is God the Father didn't die. The answer, God the Son did. We're told God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.

Q. Who was the mediator of the Old Testament? Answer Moses was the mediator of the O.T. He is a type of Christ in many ways. This mediatorial office is just one of them. Another interesting observation of Mr. Pink's was that the entry into the Promised Land was preceded by the mediator of the individual covenants.

Q. V17 Why is there no power in a covenant while the one who made it is alive? Answer While the one who made it lives, they can change it. While they live, those things described in the testament or covenant remains theirs to do with as they please. Ownership is only transferred after their death.

Q. What was and is the major stumbling block to Jews in accepting Jesus as the Messiah? Answer Deu 21:22,23 "If a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance." How could anyone claim to be the Messiah who was cursed by God? It just doesn't make any sense. Much as it took a supernatural revelation for Joseph not to divorce Mary for adultery, it takes a supernatural revelation of faith to trust the one who has become a curse for us. Bless His holy name!

Now for this week.
Q. Why was the shedding of blood necessary?

Q.V21 Why were all the vessels in the tabernacle sprinkled with blood? See also Ex. 24:6-8

Q. Does this practice instruct us today? How might it be applied today?

Q.Why the exception in Lev 5:7-11?

Hebrews 9:16-22

With the help of A.W. Pink and friends here are some thoughts and question.

V16 Who is the "one who made it?"
Who was the mediator of the Old Testament?
V17 Why is there no power in a covenant while the one who made it is alive?
What was and is the major stumbling block to Jews in accepting Jesus as the Messiah?
Why was the shedding of blood necessary?
V21 Why were all the vessels in the tabernacle sprinkled with blood?
How might that be applied today?
Why the exception in Lev 5:7-11

See you Wednesday night! (Lord willing :) )

Hebrews 9:15

We were about ready to move on from this verse to verse 16 and following when I realized we hadn't done the last part of the verse justice.
...those who have been called may received the promise of the eternal inheritance.

How could we not reflect on that wonderful Christian doctrine, the electing work of God and the effectual calling of a particular people unto Himself. The promise of the inheritance is for those who are called.
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved...Ephesians 1:4-6

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him... John 6:44

...and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed... Acts 13:48

All that the Father gives Me will come to Me... John 6:37
God for reasons known only to Him has decided to extent mercy to some and justice to others. Oh brothers and sisters how blessed is the man or woman whom the Sovereign of the universe has chosen and called from before the beginning of time to grant mercy to. Bless His most Holy name!
